Another dozen photographs from the camera of the kriegsberichter assigned to cover the advance of 29 Infantry Division into Russia in the summer of 1941. For me, and perhaps for others---or perhaps not, it does not matter---these depictions of what the Fuehrer unleashed upon the population of the Soviet Union are equally as painful to consider as are the more gruesome ones we have already seen. It is safe to say that no one here, Russian or German, asked to be placed in such abysmal circumstances. Neither, by the way, did the animals they took with them. GT-44 depicts the burial ceremony surrounding the death in action of the commander of a German Aufklaerungs unit. His departure from this world was likely one of the very few marked by his fellow soldiers for memorialization. As in most wars, the vast majority of victims are without either identity or remembrance.
