|INSTAHLGEWITTERN-IN THE STORM OF STEEL||
This set of photographs was taken by an unidentified Waffen SS Kriegsberichter who was serving with Waffen SS Regiment Germania in the winter of 1943. The series of photographs does not include material that specifically dates the pictures.
The first several pictures depict an awards ceremony in the snow. Some of the pictures are not of the best quality.
From January through May 1943 Waffen SS Division Wiking, of which Regiment Germania formed a part, served in southern Russia near Manytsch, Isjum, and Charkow. It was thus outside the ring of Soviet forces surrounding 6th Army at Stalingrad. This service was, as the photographs illustrate, not a picnic.
The soldiers assembled for the award ceremony are being awarded the Iron Cross, in most cases, First Class. On the sleeve of the officer making the awards can be seen the Germania regimental armband.
A very young-looking Waffen SS trooper now wearing both the Iron Cross First and Second Class.
The last four photographs in this sequence show a wounded Germania trooper being evacuated by several of his comrades.
